What about drawing from your life experiences? Although, a lot of my life experiences are actually things that I've read or seen that changed the way I think.
When creating a character and seeking their motivation, we can draw from a similar life experience or a source of emotion that will fit properly and place and amplify it into a part of the story. I say amplify because I expect my characters to experience tragedy and triumph at magnitudes far beyond anything I have experienced. My life would be pretty tame and boring if it were to be made into a stage play or a musical. Just think of it: "Enrique: The Musical."

I have never been chased by a T-Rex. I have been chased by a barking dog. I take the lived life experience with the dog and imagine a T-Rex instead.
